Mowbray forced to step back from Birmingham job after just a month

Coaching staff led by Mark Venus will take temporary charge for up to two months while manager focuses on recovery from illness

Tony Mowbray is stepping down at Birmingham City for up to two months after a recent health check revealed an illness.
Mowbray held talks with his squad on Monday morning to inform them that he would be taking time away from the club to focus on his recovery.
The former Sunderland and Celtic manager was appointed as Wayne Rooney’s replacement last month and the news is another shock for the Championship club in their turbulent season.
Though the precise nature of the illness is unknown at this stage, it is serious enough for Mowbray, 60, to take an extended break.
Mark Venus, his assistant, will take temporary charge though Birmingham may look into the possibility of making a short-term appointment with 16 games remaining.
In a statement, Mowbray said: “Following my recent LMA Health Assessment I have received a medical diagnosis that will require me to receive treatment. Undergoing treatment will necessitate that I temporarily step away from the Technical Area as Manager of Birmingham City Football Club.
“Until I return, my assistant manager, Mark Venus, will take temporary charge of the team, supported by coaches Ashley Cole, Pete Shuttleworth and Maik Taylor. I will continue to provide advice and counsel while undergoing treatment.
“The Club has been incredibly supportive of me and my family and we are very grateful. I know that everyone will be respectful of our privacy at this time.”
Mowbray has guided Birmingham to four wins from eight Championship matches since his appointment at St. Andrew’s.
On Saturday he secured a 2-1 win over former club Sunderland, who controversially dismissed him in December.
Birmingham’s chief executive Garry Cook said:  “Our thoughts are with Tony, his wife Amber, and family. We wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to welcoming Tony back to the Club to continue the excellent work that he has started.
“In the meantime, Mark Venus, Ashley Cole, Pete Shuttleworth and Maik Taylor, will be given all the support they need to lead the Club forward.”
Birmingham return to league action this weekend with a trip to Ipswich, the club where Mowbray made over  120 appearances.
